Having the right documents in hand will smooth the process of buying a new vehicle.

In the excitement of buying a car, it’s easy to overlook the documents you need to close the sale. Here’s a handy checklist to make sure you’re prepared with everything you need at the dealership.

Documents needed to buy a car at a dealership

In order to complete your purchase transaction, a dealership will need these documents:

  • Driver’s license
  • Proof of insurance
  • Proof of income
  • Payment—could be payment in full, a down payment or financing documents

If you have a trade-in, also bring:

  • Title for your current vehicle
  • Loan details, including lender and account number, if the vehicle isn’t paid off
Special rebates require extra documentation

Some manufacturers offer rebate programs for specific groups, like recent college grads or veterans. To get the special, you’ll need to bring documents proving eligibility. Ask the dealer what’s required.

The dealership handles registration details

One big plus of buying a car through a dealership is that they handle the paperwork, including the registration of the vehicle in your name with the Secretary of State. They can also facilitate the transfer of your old plates to your new vehicle.
