Citi Will Devalue ThankYou Points
Citi sent out emails this weekend to many Citi Strata Premier and Prestige cardholders, announcing an upcoming devaluation of ThankYou points. Starting in late August, the value of ThankYou points will drop by 25%, when redeemed for Cash Back. That means that instead of a value of 1 cent per point, it will go down to 0.75 cents per point.
Here’s the text of the email:
We are writing to let you know that we are making a change to the ThankYou® Rewards Program. Effective 08/24/25, the redemption value for Cash Back redeemed through the ThankYou Rewards account associated with your Citi Strata Premier® will change.
Current Value for Cash Back: 10,000 ThankYou Rewards Points are redeemable for $100.
New Value for Cash Back, effective 08/24/25: 10,000 ThankYou Rewards Points are redeemable for $75.
You may redeem ThankYou Points for Cash Back at the current redemption value through 08/23/25. After that, the new redemption value will apply.
Remember: There are many other great ways to redeem ThankYou Points for rewards like booking flights and hotel stays through Citi Travel® or redeeming for gift cards from popular brands. Sign on to thankyou.com to see all the different ways you can use ThankYou points.
Guru’s Wrap-up
This is a surprising move, especially since the email are only going out to some Citi Strata Premier and Citi Prestige cardholders. It’s strange to devalue ThankYou points for those customers only, since they can move points to a Custom Cash or Double Cash card and still cash out at 1cpp. So far there’s been no word of those cards being affected.
With all that said, it’s still worth noting that the best use of ThankYou points is transferring them to travel partners where you can usually get a value of well over 1cpp. But losing that base value of 1 cent per point, is still disappointing.
