Why NACUSO Advocacy Matters
As interim CEO, I’ve heard from many members seeking clarity on why advocacy matters for CUSOs and other organizations serving credit unions—and what distinguishes NACUSO from other advocacy groups like the Credit Union Leagues and America’s Credit Unions. This update directly addresses these questions, highlighting NACUSO’s unique advocacy role supporting both CUSOs and the broader credit union services community.
CUSOs embody the cooperative spirit central to credit unions. By driving shared innovation, pooling resources, and creating strategic opportunities beyond the reach of individual credit unions, CUSOs address common challenges, reduce costs, and significantly enhance member services. Additionally, NACUSO’s support for fintech innovation positions credit unions to remain competitive, proactively lead market growth, and swiftly meet evolving member expectations, rather than merely following industry trends.
Despite their importance, CUSOs and credit union service providers often lack sufficient recognition or regulatory support. Effective advocacy ensures these entities continue to deliver innovative solutions and significant cost savings, benefiting credit unions of all sizes.
Without our representation in policy discussions, other interests—like banking associations—will influence regulations in ways detrimental to our effectiveness and growth.
NACUSO remains a leader in advocacy, achieving key milestones such as the passage of the CUSO Lending Law, significantly expanding permissible activities. This advancement enables greater flexibility, improved risk management, and expanded member services through collaborative CUSO efforts.
Our 2024-25 Legislative and Regulatory Advocacy Plan underscores our commitment to cultivating a regulatory environment conducive to cooperation, innovation and collaboration.
Key objectives include:
At NACUSO’s Reimagine 2025 Conference, advocacy takes center stage. Join us for “Strength in Unity: The Evolving Role of Advocacy,” featuring leaders from DCUC, NASCUS, Brownstein, and ACU. Be sure to join us Wednesday night for our spirited Dare-eoke Party—a joyful evening blending camaraderie and creativity as we celebrate advocacy and raise funds in a fun and memorable way!
Let’s unite, amplify our collective voice, and secure a vibrant future for both CUSOs and credit unions.
